RWBY: Rooster Teeth's Family-Friendly Action Series
Web Cartoon
In 2013 Rooster Teeth, a production studio, created RWBY (pronounced "ruby"), a fantasy web series that centered on the lives of four girls as they went to school to learn to be better fighters, tried to get along despite their differences, and occasionally fought monsters and other assortments of villains. So far RWBY has had positive criticism from viewers. From its conception until the end of its second volume of episodes, RWBY has managed to gain favor and generally good reviews, which meant that its story looks like it may go on for a long time. One method Rooster Teeth used to gain support for this series was the use of multiple trailers that made people want to learn more about the main characters and the world RWBY took place in. When the series finally began making actual episodes, Rooster Teeth also made the actual story both interesting and fun to watch, mostly because of the awesome action sequences that came from the main characters working together. And the majority of positive famale representation also helped RWBY gain fans. Unlike a majority of the content Rooster Teeth has produced, like the Red vs. Blue series, Rwby was a show that viewers of all ages could see without use of profanity or comedy that might be too mature for younger viewers. But overall RWBY has been an entertaining series that was entertaining and enjoyable in its own right.
Trailers
To make people curious enough about RWBY to want to watch the series, Rooster Teeth made a series of trailers that exposed the main characters, but not reveal too much about what the story was going to be about. All of the trailers were only referred to the color that each main character represented, the trailers basically showed the viewer what kind of action could be expected from the series as a whole once the episodes were produced, and the song that accompanied each trailer also revealed the tone of the series and the personalities of each characters. Another interesting aspect about RWBY's trailers were the references to fairy tales. Interestingly enough, the trailers also appeared in the order the letters in RWBY were ordered. Red first, White second, Black third, and Yellow fourth.
- Red Trailer: The girl in red established the kind of action one could expect from RWBY. After revealing the series creator Monty Oum, the trailer centered-on a girl primarily clad in red colors. Taking place in a primarily white forest, the girl was surrounded by wolf-like monsters. Viewers who have read Little Red Riding Hood would notice that the girl seems to be a reference to that character. However, rather than make a girl who got eaten by the wolf, Monty made a character who killed a wolf. When using a rifle that also doubled as a scythe, the girl in red was able to slay all of the wolves in the trailer.
- White Trailer: Unlike the first trailer, the second trailer was mostly calm for the entire portrayal of its character. And implied voices from its characters. Here, the main character this trailer focused on seemed to be a reference to the damsel-in-distress characters like Snow White. With the girl in white apparently singing the song from the trailer, the viewer saw her fight a giant, armored knight. Using a rapier with magical properties, the girl in this trailer fought in a more graceful manner. Using what looked to be magic in this series, she fought with a mix of rapier fighting stances and teleportation magic. Although there were times where standard sword slashes were shown. Unlike the first trailer, this girl actually got injured. Fortunately, this girl still won in her fight. And also did pretty well as a singer.
- Black Trailer: Here, RWBY introduced voices for its characters. And a name for its focused character; Blake. Here we see the girl in black attempt to steal something on a train. This trailer introduced some moral ambiguity to RWBY in that while she seemed willing to destroy property, cause structural damage to a train, and generally be destructive, she also refused to hurt actual people. So while it was implied that she would have a somewhat rebellious personality, she at least had enough compassion to avoid needless injuries to innocent bystanders. Since the girl's companion in this trailer seemed to look more like an animal, the girl seemed to be a reference to Beauty and the Beast.
- Yellow Trailer: The fact that this trailer had a yellow-haired focus character, took place in a nightclub with a bear-faced DJ, and had an antagonist with the name Junior basically meant that this was a reference to Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This being the final trailer, the people at Rooster Teeth had this be the most action-packed of the trailers. It also emphasized that this would be the end of the trailers and the main series would begin soon. Yang, the girl in yellow, fought numerous humans into submission, the music combined the songs of all the the trailers plus its own song, and the viewer got an intriguing aspect about RWBY in that apparently the girl in red and Yang were connected in some way.
The Series
RWBY was essentially a show that used various magical girl ideas from Japanese animé. The girls had to go to school when they were not being superheroes or fighting monsters, everyone who was a main or supporting character had special abilities, and there were moments where the show could get silly while also being serious at the same time. Unlike a majority of magical girl animé, all of the characters that the girls interact with also have powers and are in the same situation as the girls, so no secret identities. Like most cases of the magical girl genre however, RWBY makes moments where the main characters working together was something to get excited about.
Here we see an example of two groups in RWBY working together to slay two giant monsters. Team RWBY, the official name of the team consisting of the main characters of this series and Team JNPR (pronounced "juniper"), the supporting characters in this video, managed to defeat two giant animals by working together and using their strengths to their advantage. It was thrilling, the characters were funny during certain points in their respective fights, and the viewer got to see the main characters become a team for the first time.
Female Characters
One reason why RWBY was such a favored show by fans was the representation that females received in this series. Everybody, male and female, could equally fight giant monsters with barely any scratches. During Volume 2 of the series another team, Team CFVY (pronounced "coffee"), made an appearance. Introduced as one of the senior members of the school Team RWBY attended, they basically did tasks that were considered too difficult for students at Team RWBY's level.
As one of the older students in RWBY, Team CFVY got to be shown as vastly overpowered. In this video, one of the members had a handbag that could defy the laws of physics and turn into a giant gatling gun. Which destroyed multiple monsters, whereas Team RWBY would have used all of their ability to just slay one.
Watch RWBY
RWBY was an awesome show that takes many of its ideas from the Magical Girl genre of animé. The trailers showed that the main characters were able to fight different kinds of enemies fairly easily. The first couple of episodes showed that their teamwork could work wonders. And later episodes showed different females doing awesome things.
